Nerds Ropes are an awesome candy. You have a long chewy licorice rope encased in yummy nerds candy. It is like two candies in one!
So for this candy, we had to start with the rope. That was easy with TFA's Red Licorice. Next we had to figure out what to do about those nerds! What are nerds really? Nerds are the essence of skittles but without the chewy insides, and that is where the rainbow drops come in. You have to be careful with this flavor though, because if you use too much, it turns into lemon pledge (Like so many fruit loops recipes). The insides are rather a different story. The insides are more like smarties candies, which is where the Sweet and tart comes in. The flavors work, they are accurate, but they are a little rough on their own. This is where the dragon fruit comes in. If I had the luxury of a fifth flavor, I would have kept the dragon fruit at .25% and added 1% of Tfa Meringue to both emulsify and smooth things out. As I am allergic to all artificial sweeteners and that fifth flavor is not an option, I had to work a little magic. I bumped the dragon fruit up to 1%, and was thrilled to find that the mix was just as good as the .25% dragon fruit/1% meringue option.
Enjoy!
This recipe made 3rd place in the second round of DoD World Mixer's Comp II round two. The criticism was that the sweet and Tart was too high, so I have knocked it down to 3%> Will update if I think it needs to be tweaked further. Like adding just a little Marshmallow!
Do leave feedback if you try it, it is a shake and vape!
Update 2/21/17 Reduced the Red Licorice to 4.75%, and now it is so much better balanced.
@Vapor_Douche, I am sorry this has been your experience.. it is to be a shake and vape recipe, but I've not heard anyone with a problem before this. In any case, I am sorry you didn't like it. 😔
Thanks for this recipe !!! Is awesome!!. Only problem is i cannot make more than 30 ml cause of Rainbow Drops since always after 3-4 days the damn flavor fade >.> We need a substitute that does not fade for this and this is GOLD
@Chapel Hello there just wanted to come forward with today's mix. So today i made 30 ml with the Dragon Fruit at .25% and Meringue at 1%. Now i use Flavor art Meringue since i didn't have TFA, as shake and Vape i prefer the original version since it taste more candy like from the get go. I will let it steep for 1 day then try again see what changes. Again Thanks for recipe.
@Adam_P - red Licorice is akin to red twizzlers, Anise is more Black Licorice. You could try it, but the result would be far closer to Mike and Ike's than nerd rope. If you try it that way, be sure and let me know how it turns out. Now, that having been said, I think it might be possible to replicate the taste of red licorice with FA Black Currant and FA Oba Oba. Look up the Black Currant under flavor list on this site to fine usage recommendation, the FA Oba Oba should be around 1%
I am excited to try this I just ordered the stuff for it. Would I be able to add a little super sweet to it or does it not need it. Is it pretty sweet on its own
Munson, It is quite sweet on it's own, and I've never used sweeteners in any of my recipes, nor have I heard anyone needing it in this. I will ask around and let you know if anyone thinks it needs it. 😉
Actually Munson, I haven't had a commercial juice in years. Allergic to Artificial sweeteners and sensitive to Diketones so, It's always been easier to diy. I hope you enjoy the recipe! Congratulations on starting DIY!
Chapel: It tends to fade with marshmallow added compared to V1. I've gone through ~200mL of v1 and v2 combined, and think V1 had a stronger more satisfying flavour.
For improvements (now that you don't have to stick with 4 flavours for the DoD comp) would you still recommend this version, minus marshmallow, dropping dragonfruit to 0.25-0.5% and adding meringue?
Followup. Tried with both 0.75% dragonfruit and meringue. Meringue throws the flavour off for at least 4 days until it steeps in and the bakery note goes. I think there may be a better option than meringue for emulsifying, was thinking tfa whipped cream along with dragonfruit. Either way this is a great recipe to keep on tweaking for my tastes.
Gadya- if you have any sort of rainbow candy at your disposal, like Skittles that would work as a sub. Not sure which flavors you have to work with, so it is hard to offer more help.
Chapel, you are right - I'm sorry. I thought about replacing the Rainbow Sherbet (TPA) or (Forest Mix CAP(?). if necessary - for the taste of plastic/candy - a drop of jelly candy (cap) or bubblegum (tpa)(?) (? = big doubt)) Great expectations for Rainbow Sherbet.
Pretty good vape. I did the .25 dragon fruit, 1% meringue. I like how subtle it is, but still has good flavor. Definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks . I just mixed this up and my first impression is pretty good.
Seems well balanced not too much anything. I'm going to let it rest a day or so before I really go to town on it but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it.
Thanks again for the recipe. 5 star for me.
thanks i might add ripe strawberry to it if its to bitter or something or more dragon fruit to blend easier. honestly i think a ripe strawberry would be an ok sub. i got one mixing i thought i had marshmallow but only had whip cream . so i guess i butchered it but i only made 100ml so we will see how it goes lol. ill post some edits but right now its all the same %s just no licorice
ok so for a quick update i use a mag. stirrer i made with some spare computer parts so i let it mix all night slowly to help it mix and steep faster. well i tried it today been vaping it at work and at first it tastes like you just ate a handful of skittles its like spot on but the after taste and the longer you vape on it. idk if any of you remember when skittles tried to make bubble gum., but thats exactly what this tastes like skittles bubble gum, its actually really good thank you for this recipe and if you want since its yours to begin with you can make the skit bubble gum just use whip cream instead of marshmallow and no licorice. 5 star rating :)
I tried this and thought there was something unbalanced. It was good, but something was off. Second trial , I raised sweet and tart to 3.5%, lowered Red Licorice to 4.6%, and raised rainbow drops to 3.9%. Btw the marshmallow was unnecessary and muted the recipe. So much better without it. No meringue either. Just 1% Dragonfruit is perfect. This will get you closer to nerds rope. There's still something missing though. This recipe taste more like a dulled nerd. Kind of like nerds after you chewed them up pretty good instead of how super tart and bright they are when you first night into them. Idk how to emulate that in the vape and what flavor I would choose for that, but that's what's missing.
Triston, thank you so much for your feedback! I appreciate it and hope it can help others that might not be super sold on the recipe.
One thought. I would be willing to bet that a very very low % addition on FA Candy/Jammy wizard would give you exactly what you are looking for. And when I say low, I mean in the .15%-.25% range.
If you try this, do let me know what you think!
Yeah it's definitely that sharp, super tart note that almost makes your lips pucker. I definitely will have to pick those flavors up and give em a try. Idk if you still vape this flavor, but if you ever mix it again, do try the percentages I suggested and you'll see a pretty decent improvement in terms of balance. Now all you need to give me is a bottle caps or sweet tart ropes recipe :) idk if you have ever tried the rope version of sweet tarts, but they are phenomenal and seem pretty simple to clone lol
Like....actual food or a vape?
TBF. I don't vape this any more. I mixed back in the days when I could still handle a little bit of Diketones in my mixes. 😉
For a while now I have enjoyed your recipes. This one is no different. I adapted it for a mtl pod (adjust total flavor %) to 25% and mix to 60/40. Very nice and enjoyable vape. Thanks for sharing.
Marek's Mayhem, thank you for your kind words!
diyjuicer- I literally just saw that. I am in shock!! I never ever expected any sort of publicity. I hope you enjoy it!
Apparently mixing this is "complicated" lol. Granted the person in the nbc news article is a first time DIYer... anywho, for a first mix she picked a pretty good one. Been a while since I had those nerd ropes or even nerds but it's pretty spot on.
Also, I hope other new DIYers heed the warnings in that article... like, uhm.. don't squirt nicotine directly into your eyes. >.\
